As a senior in college, I wanted to push myself to do something I would be too lazy to do otherwise, and I thought running a half marathon would be a great idea!

You may or may not know this about me, but something that's always been on my heart since high school was raising awareness for human trafficking, particularly the heinous crimes behind the sex industry including the trafficking of women and children across the globe. These individuals comprise the slaves of our generation. Whether we choose to believe it or not, it's happening. And the numbers are growing. So what are we to do?

For me, that question has always been a stifling one. What am I, a naive and overly idealistic 21 year-old, to do about modern day slavery? Is there anything we can do to stop it? How do we deal with the aftermath in terms of the victims who are able to escape the life of slavery but with nowhere to go?

An awesome organization called RestoreNYC started up because the founders asked themselves the same questions and came up with possible solutions to help alleviate the problem. RestoreNYC provides holistic aftercare to international survivors of sex-trafficking in New York City. It is the only non-profit organization of its kind that has opened a safehouse in the city with on-sight staff and around-the-clock care and service.

I ran the 13.1 Half Marathon two years ago and I raised over $1,000 for World Vision and I was hoping that you could join me in this effort and help raise just as much, if not more, this time to help these women who have had their dignity, hope, and often times their sanity stripped from them. It is only through organizations like RestoreNYC that these women will be able to see a brighter future.
