Joanna Jennings and Annie Lascoe are social work students at Columbia University who are passionate about art and serving women. Both students are involved with Restore NYC (http://restorenyc.org), which is a nonprofit organization that provides aftercare services to international survivors of sex trafficking, and currently operates the only residential safe house for sex trafficking survivors in the Northeast.
Upon visiting the safe house and speaking with the women there, Joanna and Annie determined that an art therapy program with a particular focus on healing from trauma could become an essential offering of Restore’s programming. This spring, they will be piloting an art therapy program that is culturally and linguistically tailored to the safe house resident population. The pilot will be offered in three modules: ceramics, cooking, and drawing, with the hope that sufficient funds can be generated to ensure the sustainability of the program.
Due to the delicate nature of trauma-focused art therapy, specifically with vulnerable populations, Joanna and Annie believe that this program could only remain on-going and effective under the supervision of a credentialed art therapist. They want to ensure the continuity of art therapy at Restore and are fundraising $12,000 to be able to pay an art therapist for part-time supervision, as well as for supplies in the coming year.
